Privacy policy.
How this website handles your information — kept deliberately small, and explained plainly.

Who I am
This website, nesterenko.co.uk (the "site"), is operated by Igor Nesterenko, based in Bristol, United Kingdom. For anything in this policy I am the "data controller" responsible for your personal data. You can reach me at igor@nesterenko.co.uk.
This policy explains what data the site collects, why, how it is protected, and the rights you have under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
The short version
This is a personal portfolio and writing site. It does not sell anything, run accounts, or build advertising profiles. It collects the minimum needed to operate, and analytics only run if you choose to allow them.
What data is collected
- Information you choose to send — if you email me (or contact me through a linked service), I receive your email address and whatever you include in the message.
- Technical log data — like virtually all websites, the hosting server automatically records standard request information (IP address, browser type, pages requested, date and time). This is used to keep the site secure and working.
- Analytics data (optional) — only if you consent, anonymous usage statistics (such as which pages are visited) may be collected. You can decline, and nothing analytics-related runs unless you accept.
The site does not knowingly collect special-category data, and there is no requirement to provide any personal data to browse it.
Cookies and similar technologies
On your first visit you are shown a cookie notice. Nothing optional is set until you make a choice, and you can change it at any time via .
| Type | Purpose | Set without consent? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Remembers your cookie choice (stored locally in your browser). The site cannot function correctly without it. | Yes — exempt under PECR |
| Analytics (optional) | Aggregated usage statistics to understand what content is useful, via Google Analytics 4 (provided by Google). Sets cookies such as _ga and _ga_<id>; IP anonymisation is enabled. Nothing loads until you accept. | No — only after you accept |
If you reject analytics, or simply ignore the notice, no analytics cookies or scripts are loaded.
Why I am allowed to use your data (legal bases)
- Consent — for optional analytics cookies. You can withdraw it at any time and it is as easy to refuse as to accept.
- Legitimate interests — for keeping the site secure and operational (server logs), provided this does not override your rights.
- Performance of communication you initiate — when you email me, I use your details to reply.
Third-party services
A few external services help the site run. Each has its own privacy policy:
- Hosting — the site is hosted on Hostinger, which processes server logs on my behalf.
- Google Fonts — fonts are loaded from Google's servers, which means your IP address is shared with Google to deliver them. (These can be self-hosted to avoid this; ask if you would like that.)
- Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) — only if you consent. Used for anonymous, aggregated usage statistics; see the Google privacy policy.
- External links — the site links to places such as LinkedIn, Medium, X, Xing and Facebook. Once you follow a link, that third party's own policy applies; I am not responsible for their content or practices.
International transfers
Some providers (for example Google Fonts or an analytics provider) may process data outside the UK. Where that happens, those transfers rely on appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or an adequacy decision.
How long data is kept
Emails are kept only as long as needed to handle your enquiry and any follow-up. Server logs are retained for a short period for security and troubleshooting, then deleted or anonymised. Analytics data is retained according to the provider's settings; your cookie choice persists in your browser until you clear it or it expires.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to: access your data; ask for it to be corrected or erased; restrict or object to its processing; data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email igor@nesterenko.co.uk and I will respond within the statutory timeframe (normally one month).
If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the UK regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. I would appreciate the chance to resolve it first.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS, and reasonable technical measures are in place to protect data. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
Children
The site is intended for a general professional audience and is not directed at children. I do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated from time to time. The "last updated" date above reflects the latest version, and material changes affecting consent will prompt the cookie notice to appear again.
